Top 10 Reasons Why Evanescence Is NOT Emo.

1) Assuming we take the ACTUAL definition of emo, "broad title that covers a lot of different styles of emotionally-charged punk rock." Well it's quite obvious that Evanescence is clearly a rock band, with no punk influences or punk foundations. guitar riffs and rythm guitar is not played fast neither is the drum beat.

2) Assuming we take the more common and over generalised version of emo "black skinny jeans, black band hoodie, heavy eye makeup, big black fringe and a sad, depressed outlook on life with a penchant for slitting ones wrists and talking about how hard their lives are". One by one,
Amy doesn't wear any of the above, except when she is performing, which is exemt because most people wear heavy make up when performing. It's called STAGE LIGHTS. Any emo-ness that Amy has is understandable. When she was 5 her three year old sister died. Amy was in the same room when it happened.
John le Compt
doesn't wear anoy of the above EITHER. has short spiky gelled hair and metal tatoos. Has the most positive out look on life
Rocky
is a chubby shaven head metal lover who wwears skate shoes and long baggy shorts, none of which are emo.
Terry
the dread lock toting guitarist usually dresses in a traditional chinese shirt and black pants. also, like Amy any traditional emo-ness that Terry has is probably justified. He suffered a stroke last November and was told he would never play the guitar again.

3) emo style singing is as follows "ranging from normal singing in the quiet parts to a kind of pleading howl to gut-wrenching screams to actual sobbing and crying." Amy Lee's voice is not a pleading howl, nor a scream, nor sobbing. As a classically trained singer and piano player, Amy has a classical voice witha huge range. Singers of emo bands are usually barely able to sing at all, let alone have abrilliant range.

4) Photos of Evanescence are not anything like emo photos. They aren't self taken at a high angle to accentuate their non existant fringes and shadows. If anything, the photos have a gothic influence. It is well documented that goths and emo's do not friends, make.

5) The band have far too much energy and zest for life to be self depracating emo's

6) While most emo's are against corporations and all brand names, Ev flaunt their love of establishments such as White Castle (american fast food chain), McDonalds, Burger King, Adidas, Bonds and Dickies (american skate brand). Also Amy is a Paul Frank lover.

7) out of a posible 50 or 60 songs, only one is clearly identified to be about suicide. that song, Tourniquet, appears on the Fallen album, which was almost entirely written by Ben Moody who has since left the band. Since then, Amy has begun writing with Terry and together they have made an album that has songs dealing with crazy fans, depression, happiness, success, infidelity and broken relationships.

8) Ev are able to LAUGH at themselves. During concerts, when Amy is playing the solo part of My Immortal, the boys stand backstage with the roadies with cigarette lighters pretending to cry and then collapsing into giggles. One of the traits of Emo's are that they are unable to laugh at themsleves, they take themselves so seriously.

9) Emo draws no inspiration from any kind of traditionaly music. Evanescence has songs, in particular, Breathe No More which contains hints of Spanish Flamenco guitar, and Lacrymosa samples Mozarts Requiem.

10) emo-ness is also often about Matyrdom. they are often Straight Edge (XXX, StraightXEdge etc) which means no alcohol, no drugs (cigarettes included) and no promiscuous sex (although practicing safe sex with a loved one is okay). They are also often vegetarians or vegans and very very thin which brings up allegations of bulimia and anorexia. the folks of evanescence are none of these things.

Angus kept calling them ShihadNoTalent. I thought they were fairly good. They were better than the last time I saw them (when they opened for Grinspoon). They played an oldie, Comfort Me (back when they were Pacifier). It went OFF.

A roadie came out and started testing Amy's mic saying "One, Two, Yeeap. C is for Cookie". People started laughing and he said "What? Sesame Street is cool, I don't care WHAT you say" Heh.

And then it all went black. Hoorah

Amy had the coolest skirt ever. Bright Pink and made from tulle and feathers.hehe she shakes her but when she plays the keyboard. hilarious.

And there was SNOW during Lithium. BEAuTIFUL

Obviously these aren't my photos, I stole then from Flickr. But they give the IDEA.

It was so so awesome, I can't even describe. Happy happy night.

I feel like a lot of people aren't talking to me anymore. And I feel like now is one of those weird times when you find out who your real friends really are.
